The new face of auctioneering

Laidlaw Auctioneers and Valuers, an exciting new auction firm has this month opened its doors in the heart of Carlisle. Founder Paul Laidlaw is a well-known BBC antiques expert who appears regularly on popular programs such as ‘Bargain Hunt’, ‘Antiques Road Trip’ and ‘Celebrity Antiques Road Trip’. He has earned a reputation for conviviality, true specialist expertise and strong results.

Paul's aim is to present antiques, collectors’ items and fine furnishings in a modern light, bridging the gap between past and present, and reaching out to a younger audience by embracing the digital age.

Nowhere is this more apparent than in the saleroom Paul has lovingly refurbished, part of a Victorian mill, a hidden monument to Carlisle’s industrial past. Rather than overhaul the space, every effort has been taken to retain its inherent charm, such as the original windows, brickwork and exposed pipes. The new saleroom has evolved within this space, with the modern additions of pendent ceiling lights, glass partitions and digital displays, merging effortlessly with the Victorian mahogany rostrum at the centre of the space.

With the same emphasis upon merging the traditional with contemporary, Paul will present the antiques he auctions. “We provide a unique retail experience to those new to the auction world, whether you prefer the traditional approach, soaking up the saleroom ambience with its period glass display cabinets, or participating online via live internet bidding from the comfort of your home or office; both are catered to for equal measure”.

Modern technology makes these sales literally unmissable, good news for both sellers and buyers alike. “Our aim is to utilize technology unlike any other saleroom” says Paul, “to make buying at auction effortless and fun.”

Laidlaw Auctioneers and Valuers will be holding monthly auctions of antiques, collectors’ items and fine furnishings. Further details can be found at their website laidlawauctioneers.co.uk
